Burning Rage

Burning Rage

MOTIVE: POSSIBLE TERRORISM. M.O.: ARSON. TARGET: CHICAGO; ALL OF IT.

It’s already been a rough year for the Chicago Journal’s first-rate journalistic sleuth, Deuce Mora. After two agonizing investigations – one of which won her a Pulitzer Prize, the other of which forced her to kill a man – she claims she’s sworn off action-packed chases that cause nightmares. Still…from the moment she hears the earliest details of the first fire, her detective-instincts say the pieces don’t fit, and every other instinct tells the hard-hitting reporter she can’t walk away from the story – even though she knows she’ll regret it.

As a series of deadly fires destroys landmarks first, then occupied structures, the body count rises by scores and the city is gripped by terror at Christmastime, adding lost revenue to property damage in the hundreds of millions. Whole blocks of Chicago real estate are falling to an arsonist, but no one knows why and everyone suspects the worst – terrorism.

After the initial tip from the lead arson investigator (aka her boyfriend), Deuce is on her own to solve the mystery. Their relationship could endanger his reputation and his job if he’s even suspected of leaking information to her, so they’ve called a temporary halt. But she’s not exactly lacking for company – her old adversary, FBI agent Colter, has a tail on her, and Colter himself keeps popping out of the shadows. His presence at the crime scene and, even more revealingly, that of an NSA agent point to the suspicion of jihadist terrorism. But no terrorist group has claimed the mayhem.

Heller’s chilling, diabolical plot promises fans of hard-boiled mysteries a substantial feast to sink their teeth into and a knock-your-socks-off ending.

Disappointing ending I have really enjoyed the three books I've read on n this series. Deuce reminds me of the early V. I. Warshawski character, both in her style and her quest to make the world better. I thought the research behind the plot and the way Jean Heller spun it was enticing but the ending was very predictable so a bit of a letdown. Won't stop me from finishing the series, though.

You'll never see it Coming Deuce Mora and Mark Hearst are involved in the hunt of a lifetime. Deuce, a journalist for the Chicago Journal and, Mark, an Investigator for the Chicago Fire Department, are dating and are first responders to a fire in an abandoned warehouse. The job is obviously arson, two bodies are found in the wreckage as well as traces of gasoline. What puzzles the authorities are the cigarette butts left nearby. As each new fire is found, the death toll skyrockets. FBI agent Ron Colter and NSA consultant Mason Cross make it abundantly clear they believe that the arsonist/s are Islamic Jihadist.Deuce is caught in the crossfire between the information she gets from Mark and her own sources, and the integrity of her editor, Eric Ryland's concerns. Deuce and Mark agree to stay separate for the duration of the investigation. The rest of this book is a wild ride, nerve tingling, gasping for air and compulsive page turning plot. You will never, never, see the end coming. I was flabbergasted. I can't recommend this book more highly. Don't miss it!

Excellent plot, characters, enjoyable presentation This series almost lost my interest in the first book due to an overwhelming load of meticulous detail. But the plot retained my interest and in the end my curiosity pulled me into the 2nd book. Again, fierce amounts of detail and the topic was as relevant to the world we find ourselves in today as that of the introductory book. This, the 3rd, seemed to ease up on detail, and it has the best story line so far. So... I'm off to book 4.

Action packed, Gripping Thriller! I love the tenacity of the strong female journalist Deuce! She has great investigative instincts and follows the leads. I also like that she has consequences to her impulsive risk taking. I liked throughout the book the author expressed the arsonist's thoughts to contrast the devastating results. I enjoyed reading the history of Chicago. Edge of your seat, suspenseful, action packed mystery!

Compelling This stand-alone is easy to follow but at times difficult to read due to emotions evoked. No editing errors, gratuitous violence or drag-you-down drama.Intriguing storyline with descriptive and informative at draws the reader into each scene. Flexible procedures, actions and reactions. Believable characters with distinct personalities and thought-provoking dialogue.I may re-read this story and always look forward to works by this author.

Deuce Mora is One Wicked Smart and Determined Big City Reporter! Jean Heller has written another riveting Deuce Mora crime thriller in Burning Rage. You read the last sentence of the last page and close the book or your Kindle and feel, “What a ride!” Again, Heller captures with authenticity the drive of a big city newspaper journalist to uncover the truth, as she seamlessly weaves in the inner operation of a big city newspaper from editor to reporter, some intriguing history and landmarks of Chicago, and Deuce Mora’s determination to smash into (or go around) any institution that’s keeping her from the truth. Having read the previous two novels in this series, I am delighted to see the reappearance of a number of completely engaging (and sometimes curmudgeon-like) characters that Deuce has to negotiate to get the information she needs. Burning Rage is a terrific read. Cannot wait to read Deuce Mora novel number 4!

Overall Pretty Good Overall this book was pretty good, but it was rather slow moving till the end. I'd read the others in this series, however, if I get the chance.

Impossible to turn away from this book. One of those true grit murder mysteries that is so rare today. The twisted plot reflects the twisted mind of the killer. The writing challenges the reader to stay on top.

Excellent. Worth Reading Twice. The third Deuce Mora book, Burning Rage is a tension and suspense filled thriller with near constant action. Deuce herself, a six foot tall female journalist, seems to have a talent for getting into very dangerous situations in what one would think would be a rather safe line of work. It never seems to work out that way for Deuce.Gifted with clever one-liners and pithy aphorisms, she has quite the sharp tongue and uses it effectively in what is otherwise a man’s world, at least in this story. Likeable and relatable, she makes a habit of being a thorn in the side of many of her law enforcement adversaries in an attempt to ferret the truth from situations they’d prefer to keep under wraps.Raging Burn is exciting and compelling and difficult to put aside for long. A serial arsonist is setting Chicago ablaze burning property and people with both the motive and clues to the perp’s identity remaining a mystery. Deuce doesn’t solve this singlehanded - she’s not Superwoman – but she does manage to extract clues that some others miss, in this case due to a never unidentified anonymous tipster. This critical plot point isn’t quite a deus ex machina, but it’s close. The descriptions of places and people are vivid and lifelike, the dialogue first rate. The story doesn’t wrap up until the final few pages, building the suspense to the very end. While clever, the solution to both mysteries seemed a bit farfetched and unlikely; I felt it to be the book’s weakest feature. But the bulk of the book was fast moving, believable, very exciting and very enjoyable to read.Technically the book is quite well edited and proofread. There were less than a dozen errors that made it through to the Kindle edition, which is impressive in a 350 page book. Despite the two plot quibbles, the vast majority of the book deserved 5 stars. It’s one I would read again.

Masterful blending of mystery, journalism and Chicago I just finished reading Burning Rage for the second time (first when it came out in October) and it was as captivating and engrossing as the first time. Deuce Mora, a journalist, finds herself in the middle of another complex crime mystery. An arsonist is burning Chicago, creating havoc. Deuce's intuition runs counter to the ideas of the FBI and NSA, putting her at odds with the feds as well as with the arsonist. While building suspense in the arsons, Heller portrays historic Chicago buildings and neighborhoods, easily sharing her knowledge and love of Chicago. Hard to put this down once you start. I'm eagerly awaiting Deuce #4.

Best Deuce Mora book yet I liked this book right away and kept liking it all the way through. Its a page turner with a very good mix of character development, psychology and danger. The finish is very climatic and I love the epilogue. Deuce keeps growing on us. I definitely like her. So I like the brief but entertaining forays into her life. She is not a simple character and I look forward to following her life choices.

FIREBUG strikes Chicago This may have been the best book yet in this series. The twist at the end is excellent. You can read these books out of order and "get it," but they are best read in order to take advantage of Deuce's character development. I'm looking forward to the next one.Oh, if you live in Chicago these books are a real treat because you are going to know the neighborhoods and restaurants Deuce inhabits.

Where there's smoke, there's fire. The book is interesting even though we are left until almost the end about the arsonist's motivation. When I found out, I thought it was pretty original. Then the end contains something totally preposterous that it really is ridiculous. But I liked it. This is the third book I've read by this author, and her main character, Deuce, is threatening a change in what she does. We'll see.Read it.

A must read for people who love mysteries in Chicago I grew up in Chicago and like reading books that take place there. Sometimes the books are great and sometimes not. This book was one of the times it was. This book is a real page turner and I even learned a few new things about a city that I love. I can't recommend this book enough. If you are looking for a fun read with a surprising end, this book is for you. I am looking forward to reading the other 2 Deuce Mora books

What a great read! This Deuce Mora book was I think the best one in the series so far. The characters are fully developed and the stories keep getting better. I only found a couple of typos and one glaring error. Montana and Clark played for the 49ers, not the Giants, who are a baseball team. I sincerely hope Jean Heller continues with this series!

All the Deuce books are good. I am from Chicago so the setting for the capers is quite familiar. Burning Rage is my favorite of them because it has historical locales and rings more believable than the other books. Once again Deuce is in the middle of thrilling conditions and it moves her personal relationships to another level.

Best one yet! I could have read in one sitting if I didn't have other interruptions like construction, truck in shop twice, World Series game five and pet care. On the second day I almost got up at midnight to read the last half but knew it was not a smart thing to do.It was a very captivating read and I think the best one yet.
