The Hunting Ground

The Hunting Ground

DEUCE MORA DOESN’T SHY AWAY FROM FIGHTS – SHE PICKS THEM. THE BIGGER THE BETTER.

Although, to be fair, this one is brought to her by a dog with a bone in his teeth.

The grisly discovery of a human bone while Deuce is out for a hike with handsome arson investigator Mark Hearst leads to the unearthing of a vast burial field, a human trafficking ring, and international intrigue. The pull-no-punches columnist-- and meticulous detective-- keeps turning up information, bit by bit, only to find some Fed in her face, at her door, emerging from the shadows, always guarding the edges of the story, insisting it will not be told. Yes, the Feds are aware of the trafficking ring; yes, they have a plan to move on it; no, Deuce can’t be told about the plan; and under no circumstances can she write about its existence.

This is the story of a lifetime-- bigger than the Vinnie Colangelo story, which earned Deuce and the Journal a Pulitzer, and, for once, she has the support of her editor, but the Journal’s lawyer appears daily, bringing warnings about “national security.” What, Deuce seethes, could be a greater matter of national security than the safety of the city’s children, who are being kidnapped and murdered?

And this story has become very personal for Deuce, as she herself admits, lamenting her loss of objectivity. The hard-hitting journalist has fallen hard for a new guy: a savvy and charming eight-year-old boy named Charles with the face of an angel and the possibility of a bright future, but at great risk due to a life in foster care. Already the street-smart kid has revealed a depth of knowledge about the failures of DCFS and the machinery meant to protect him. For Deuce, every child reported missing and every new body discovered in the hunting ground has Charles’s face. But while she’s racing to break the case wide open, her life and her career are threatened on all sides; she has to wonder where-- or if-- the Feds will stop to contain the horrific truth.

But break wide open it does, racing to an outrageous surprise ending that seems shockingly … plausible, and Deuce learns first-hand the lesson that sometimes the only way to accomplish a great good is to commit unthinkable evil, and then learn to live with the consequences. Author Heller does a masterful job of expanding the story-- and her canvas-- from a simple murder mystery to an ever-widening crime thriller, and finally to an international conspiracy.

Hiding in Plain Sight! Within a small park in Michigan, lie the bones of children…which is discovered on a thawing winter walk when a dog retrieves and delivers what is later confirmed to be the femur of a child, a child between the ages of 6 and 8. And just like that Deuce Mora, nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, begins to investigate at what becomes a growing dig site of an ever growing burial ground.Plot lines move quickly, zig and zagging with each new discovery increasing as parties, high in government add pressures to contain and/or silence any evidence of further discovery.Although there are some jump-the-shark moments that Deuce confronts, the characters push the story forward. Fast and furious read with added twists of political influence never imagined.

rips. your heart out. These are not easy novels but they are compelling, fascinating, well written accounts of “actual” events - you read this in the papers and still can’t believe it. And here with all the background details it is horrific. And you can’t turn away from the train wreck, and keep turning the pages faster. These are so well written with such wonderful complex characters. I cannot wait to start another one and continue this story.

Amazing depiction of events! While this is a work of fiction, there is a steadfast reality to the actions portrayed. Child trafficking, murder, gang violence can be found in any city. The shame of it all is that noone seems to care.

Good book. The story was very good but the editing was not. I am not any where close to being a good proof reader and I ran into several errors. Hopefully, Ms. Heller finds a better editor.

Will keep you reading until the last page! I just found this author when I read her first book in this series “The Someday File.” You really should start with this book as some characters occur in the second book. The Hunting Ground is about human trafficking , but this is really happening in our country . I volunteer as a guardian ad litem for our county court system and the stories of abuse children face at the hands of their biological parents is horrendous . Luckily , there are wonderful foster parents who will bring these children into their homes to love and care for them. But I don’t live in a big city and so have not seen how foster placement can be worse than their biological home life. But I do know it happens.Ms. Heller presents this subject in a way that is educational for her readers and if you read the acknowledgment at the end, the back story actually happened to her.So Thank You Ms. Heller, I have loved both of your books and Yes, I stayed awake at night wanting to finish them. But a little lost sleep is worth reading a Good Read!

Intriguing Very good. Great characters. Disturbing subject matter with child/sexual abuse, abduction, human trafficking, murder, and other violence triggers for some. A lot is involved in bringing down this criminal organization and various government agencies are involved. Deuce is in the middle of it all.

Great thriller This book really brought to light the terrible subject of human trafficking. What these poor victims go through. It also shows how our government can hide anything. Love the main character Deuce and can't wait to read more of her adventures.

Angry-making but brilliant! It started out feeling like a cliche familiar from the Bobbsey Twins on up ... picnicking pair stumble across an old crime. But it just got better and better all the way to the end. Well done, Jean.

Heartbreaking Subject Written Well This is a story that is fast paced, full of surprises and yet, it is sometimes hard to get through. I love the characters. The storyline is heartbreaking because it is something that does happen. As much as I liked it, there were a few things I would have changed. There was too much information and detail on politics in the Middle East. I also greatly disliked the ending of the story. Maybe it went over my head but I don't understand what happened there. I will most likely read more by this author.

Impressive!!! A tough read! Corruption in Chicago! Who’d of thought it! Child abduction, murder, corrupt politicians, child sex and bondage…horrors too despicable to even acknowledge! All to be swept under the rug of government secrecy…never to be prosecuted!I shed many tears at the horrors inflicted on those who were innocent! All because of a foreign country!

....Even more compelling than Book 1 This is a sad but powerful mystery, during a time when human trafficking throughout the world is more & more common. It's a very well-written story which, although fictional, will hopefully help open people's eyes. Please recommend this book to all your friends!

Hard hitting. This is a harrowing story, deftly told. Although it isn't graphic, the pictures conjured up leave an indelible impression. The subject matter isn't an easy one to read about, but it is deftly handled.A complex mix of whodunit, international intrigue, murder, child abuse, hope and despair produce a terrific read, great characters, taut plot and skilful writing.Highly recommended.

Riveting Human trafficking seems to answer the question just how low and deplorable people can go. Addressing a real problem and placing it in Chicago with the bad guys being Saudis, made it more believable. A sad commentary on the human condition and difficult to read at times, the story serves to bring attention to this global disgrace. Can’t help but ask, how do people get so sick?

Hard hitting and complex story line Human trafficking, children in care .... grim and realistic topics woven together in a great story line. The story of the prevalence of trafficking on a national and international scale must be told and told. And the topic of children in 'care' which is underfunded and under monitored is very important in these days and always. My only complaint is in the editing ... 'when' instead of 'went,' errors like that are distracting. Still, a great read.

This never happened For the most part, I agree with freedom of speech, but i recognize reasons why the government might squelch some info. Our repoter here drives me nuts when she gets on her high horse about this. Despite that, this book is excellent, about a very nasty subject. She is almost killed, and the FBI, CIA, NSA, FAA, CPD, and probably others try to keep her quiet about the whole affair. Read it.
