Ill Wind

Ill Wind

POE MEETS PUZO – THE WORLD’S FIRST LOCKED-ROOM MOB MYSTERY!

Hard-hitting veteran reporter Deuce Mora is awakened in the pre-dawn hours and called to the scene of a gruesome hanging to identify the body of a dear friend, an FBI agent on the verge of taking down one of Chicago’s biggest Mob operations. Deuce knows it’s murder, but the authorities have no choice but to call it a suicide – the death scene was triple-locked from the inside.

And with that, author Heller, a former journalist and frequent Pulitzer nominee, takes her place with Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle, and the great Edgar Allan Poe himself as one of the few authors ever to pull off a locked-room murder. In this one, half the fun is trying to figure out the locked-room puzzle. And the delight of finding one in a contemporary mob mystery.

The other half of course, is the tenacious Deuce herself, the tough, hard-boiled, and ever-human reporter who goes places the cops don’t even know about. And Heller’s intricate, action-packed mystery story.

The ill wind sweeping the Windy City has also whipped up two more unexplainable deaths – of perfectly healthy, able-bodied young mobsters, key witnesses about to flip on the top leaders of the Mob operation. Neither the Chicago police nor the FBI can come up with a cause of death – and they’ve looked at every kind of toxin – but our meticulous investigator, whose stock-in-trade is death-defying leaps of logic, fits together a couple of impossible puzzle pieces. The downside is that the bad guys figure out where their greatest exposure lies – and Deuce quickly becomes their new target.

Enter a Washington reporter who has been following the organized crime investigation for months at its source, in D.C. He and Deuce share a dark secret and he knows exactly where to apply pressure on her demons to keep her on the trail of her friend’s murderers. But as the Windy City begins to look more and more like the Chicago of Al Capone days, with bodies turning up in the river and shoot-outs in public places, Deuce discovers she couldn’t walk away even if she wanted to. Whoever is at the top – and this is Chicago, so the top is always way up – will stop at nothing to shut down this investigation.

Excitement galore!! How does a newspaper journalist help take down a mob crime family in Chicago??? That's the story and it is amazingly written!! Lots of characters to sift through and subplots to unravel, but the ending is superb. This is a series book but great as a stand alone read!!

another headline This story line continues to make me wonder if the author lived through any of this?! And I hope all her bones are healed and that she also is mentally in a good place. I hope all of Deuce’s cases are not so wild, or damaging. Fantastic stories and adrenaline crunch. Incredibly sad when people: colleagues and friends die, in the line of fire. You are invested in these characters and will have moments of grief. I do tell myself they aren’t real, but i know those streets of Chicago and so much of the world has this kind of corruption. Stellar writing and intricate plot - the locked room to shakedowns and OK Coral.

What An Adventure This book grabs you from page 1 and doesn't let go until the end. So much happens and just when you think it couldn't get any worse for Deuce and her cohorts, Heller proves you wrong. You won't regret buying this book but you might miss a lot of sleep as you won't be able to put it down!

Great read! This is the first book I have read by Jean Heller, but it won't be the last. I enjoy the character of Deuce Moran, and appreciate her relationships with folk from other agencies. Although some events in the book are death defyingly unlikely, the overall effect is FUN..

Exciting but twisted with lots of names The book.was a.fast read.about mobs in Chicago. Not in general but two specific mobs. One was trying to win at politics and sway how crime was handled. The other just seemed to be murdering the other one. Good main characters but others were hard to keep track of as they just appeared and had little development..

Nice plot and charactors Really liked the characters. Seemed real and interesting, Got a bit confused with the numbers of names but that probably occurred because of inconsistent reading.

The best of the Deuce Mora Series? I have read all of Jean Heller's Deuce Mora books in order, and this one ended up being my favorite, possibly tying The Someday File. The book kept me entertained with twists, turns, and that humor I so enjoy reading. I think reading in order is a must to get the full experience so I highly recommend ordering them all so you can get to Ill Wind!

Outstanding! I have devoured all four of the available Deuce Mora books in a week. I was not disappointed with any of them. They character development is flawless, but the seat design is superb! I have never been to Chicago. Having read these books, however, I have a much better idea of its charms and challenges, its history and future, its cultures and colors. Foods, beverages, and ambience are described with such splendid attention to detail that I can practically experience them with all of my senses. Not every reporter can be a novelist, and vice versa. Jean Heller vaults that professional gap cleanly!

Excellent! A page turner! Very well written with only two errors in the entire book: Colombia (not Columbia) and "It's headlights in my side mirror..."The author really knows how to tell a tale!

Great Read! The mystery revolves around Deuce , A reporter and her relationships\contacts in law enforcement. I enjoyed the open, honest conversations and exchange of information. She also a great instincts and observation skills. I appreciated the mystery of the locked room murder and unique murder weapon. I found the information about eidetic memory and the drug Sux interesting. Jean Heller is a great storyteller weaving a complex plot with interesting characters. Greed, murder, corruption, intimidation, blackmail, political power and the mob!

Compelling This stand-alone is easy to follow but at times difficult to read due to emotions evoked. No editing errors, gratuitous violence or drag-you-down drama.Intriguing storyline with plenty of twists to keep the reader guessing. Descriptive writing that draws one into each scene. Realistic procedures, actions and reactions. Believable characters with distinct personalities. Thought-provoking and informative dialogue.I may re-read this story and always look forward to works by this author.

I certainly hope it's not like last of this series because I want more of Deuce and her crazy life. She's a great character with fascinating adventures. I'm looking forward to the next book.

I like Deuce’s sense of humor. Some of Deuce’s sarcasm is like familiar things I have heard family members say in my past. Reading and remembering having heard/read these things before makes me smile and laugh. Thank you Ms. Heller, I enjoyed Deuce’s adventures and Mark sounds like a wonderful partner to know and care for.
